End of Pixel 5 and 4a: Google no longer sells affordable smartphones

Google has decided to highlight its latest smartphone models, the Pixel 6 and Pixel Pro. The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a are therefore now unavailable on the firm’s official store.

The end of Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a? Google has apparently put a stop to these smartphones of the year 2020. The site 9to5 Google noticed that the Pixel 4a was permanently removed from the Google Store in the US yesterday. It had already been out of stock for months.

Google says goodbye to Pixel 4a and 5

On the French Google Store, the Pixel 4a is actually indicated as being “now unavailable”, just like the Pixel 5, released at the same time, in October 2020. The Pixel 5 was however still sold just a few months ago.

On the official Google store, the range of smartphones offered is now particularly limited: it is only possible to buy a Pixel 6 or a Pixel 6 Pro. Suffice to say that the choice is reduced, especially since there is therefore no longer an affordable option. Indeed, the Pixel 5a 5G is not sold in France: it is only available on the American and Japanese stores, respectively at 449 dollars and 51,700 yen (about 400 euros).

The Pixel 4a will have made a lasting mark on the market by offering an alternative to classic mid-range smartphones, at a very low price – 349 euros in France. It had a nice 5.8-inch OLED screen, a compact format that Google has since completely abandoned, and which doesn’t seem to be on the plan for the Pixel 6a. The 4a was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chip paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The Google Store will therefore have sold Pixel 4a and 5 for just over a year, in Europe, North America, Australia and several Asian countries.

All heads are now turning to the Pixel 6a, a more affordable iteration of the new Pixel line that could well be launched in the spring. The latter would notably take up the design of the Pixel 6 and should have a Google Tensor chip. However, it remains to be seen whether Google will market this new model in Europe… nothing is less certain, the Pixel 5a having never been offered in France.
