End of the terrain legend – very soon: Mercedes is discontinuing the G-Class!

The G-Class from Mercedes is one of the last off-road legends still being built. But now it’s apparently over for this classic as we know it: According to a media report, the series will be phased out next year – end for the legend!

The G-Class would have outlived another off-road legend by eight years: The Land Rover Defender was discontinued in 2016 and replaced in 2020 by the current model, which is at best laughed at by many off-road freaks (but appreciated by not-so-serious off-road enthusiasts). The “G Wagon” or “Puch G”, as the Stuttgart edge is also often called, has a better reputation than its British competitor, but now has to go, as Business Insider reports. The magazine quotes from a strictly confidential internal letter: “Production of the current G-Class (…) will end in Q1 2024.” This means that the last examples will roll off the production line in the first three months of next year es: “Please note that the vehicles (W 463) must be registered by June 30, 2024 (due to mostly legal or approval requirements regarding active/passive assistance systems).” Legal regulations or the lack of willingness to implement corresponding constructive ones Changes also put an end to the old Defender after almost 70 years. However, there are, so to speak, two designated successors: the G-Class with electric drive is scheduled to come onto the market in 2024 under the name EQG. In addition, Mercedes boss Ola Källenius confirmed a few days ago that a smaller and cheaper off-road vehicle is planned. But we’ll probably have to wait another two years for that. Factory delivery in the G-Class Experience Center now also for Austria. Anyone who makes the purchase now can now book a personal vehicle collection including a unique program in Graz. The G-Class experience begins the day before the vehicle is handed over with an exclusive dinner and subsequent hotel accommodation with breakfast in downtown Graz. The next morning, a private shuttle takes participants to the G-Class Experience Center. A fleet of vehicles consisting of various G-Class models awaits you there for an individual off-road adventure, including a trip over the “Iron Schöckl” or a water crossing in the forest. The G-Class …… has been in production since 1979. It was developed in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and is manufactured in Graz. Until 2000, the G-Class was sold in Austria and some other countries under the Puch G brand. The vehicle’s body shape was hardly changed between 1979 and 2018, but technically it continued to undergo improvements and updates. These mainly concerned engine variants, the interior and safety features. In 2018, Mercedes-Benz presented a technically completely new generation, which, however, only changed the external appearance slightly.
