Over the months, Microsoft has taken care to refine its Windows 11, in order to attract as many users as possible.
But is the latest Microsoft-signed OS less energy-intensive than the “old” Windows 10?
Windows 11, one year already!
On October 5, Microsoft will celebrate the first anniversary of Windows 11. The operating system has already received various updates, and many Windows 10 users have decided to migrate to the new OS, sometimes giving in to the recurrent and insistent requests of certain computers.
At a time when the price of energy is at the heart of many discussions, the magazine Neowin decided to take an interest in the energy performance of Windows 11, compared to its predecessor. Is the new OS less energy-intensive than its elder? Not sure…
Which of Windows 11 or Windows 10 is more power hungry?
As part of the test, various versions of Windows were tested, with the basic version of Windows 11, version 22H2, version Dev Build 25201, and finally, that good old Windows 10, version 21H2. Obviously, all were installed on the same laptop, via four separate partitions, without any third-party software.
A first test developed from PCMark10 shows an autonomy of 2 h 54 with Windows 11 21H2. Autonomy climbs to 3:02 and 3:03 via Windows 11 22H2 and Windows 11 Dev, but it is Windows 10 that emerges as the big winner of the test, with an autonomy of 3:12.
Another test, carried out via YouTube under Microsoft Edge, again shows the superiority of Windows 10. The latter indeed allows to obtain an autonomy of 5:24, when the versions of Windows 11 do not manage to exceed 4 h 55.
For the record, remember that Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until October 2025. That leaves another good three years for anyone undecided to decide to migrate to the new Windows 11.
