Rowing regatta overturns pants ban for women

Women have not been allowed to wear trousers in the rowing regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England, since the 1970s. The “draconian” dress code should now be over. A petition is decisive for this.

According to a media report, all women are now allowed to wear trousers at the traditional rowing regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. As reported by the BBC, citing regatta chairman Sir Steve Redgrave, the dress code for the prestigious Steward’s Enclosure, a viewing area for co-organizers and their guests, has been adjusted accordingly.

In addition to dresses and skirts that end below the knee, trousers and trouser suits can now also be worn there. The regatta organizers are giving in to a petition from last year that criticized the dress code from the 1970s as “draconian”. For men, suits or combinations with ties or scarfs are mandatory.

University and school teams take part in the five-day Henley Royal Regatta, which first took place in 1839. The competition on the Thames also attracts thousands of onlookers. Last year, the regatta had to be canceled for the first time in its history due to the corona pandemic. This year there will be rowing in Henley from August 11th to 15th.
