What do you think of the documentary dedicated to you?
Enrico Macias: Mireille Dumas has done an extraordinary job. The title, Enrico Macias, the unexpected is quite adequate. I didn’t expect to be surprised.
Through different sequences from shows from the 70s, you appear funny. Is this your true nature?
I myself discovered by watching the movie that I am funny. As we say Dany Brillant, I am melancholy on the inside and happy on the outside.
In the film, we evoke your relationship with Dalida and Claude François, also born on the other side of the Mediterranean. Were you related?
All the contributors to the documentary are or were like brothers or sisters to me. Our relations were exceptional of solidarity. We weren’t trying to pull the blanket over ourselves. Some have disappeared like Annie Cordy. She loved me very much and I adored her too. Sacha Distel, Robert Castel, Charles Aznavour : they are gone and I miss them very much. I am also close to Gad Elmaleh, Élisa Tovati, Yves Lecoqand Liane foly who also testify.
Is Kendji Girac, who doesn’t hide his admiration for you, your artistic heir?
I find myself in him. It arouses the same enthusiasm that I aroused when I started. He respects the elders as I had respect for Charles Aznavour when I started. And to think that I had the chance to do duets with Charles!
You have also had a career as an actor. Why so (surely too) discreetly?
It is to the directors and the producers that it is necessary to ask it! I have nevertheless been seen in recent years in welcome aboard and The truth if I lie !. It’s because of Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier and then to Philippe Bouvard in Big Heads that I was able to express myself!
You play your own role in series Family Business for Netflix. Did you like the experience?
Yes, I liked it a lot. The character that plays Gerard Darmon is a fan of Enrico Macias. There have been three seasons but there won’t be a fourth. Pity.
You will be at the Olympia on April 2 and 3 with Al Orchestra. Who is your audience today?
I’m not used to bragging, but my rooms are as full as before. And yet I am 83 years old. And there are a lot of young people!
