He steals an iPhone from the RER, before being identified… because of a selfie.

Fortunately, iCloud allowed justice to be served. We explain to you.

Watch out for your smartphones

A few days ago, on the platform of Orsay-Ville station, in Essonne, a 21-year-old young adult was spotted by security cameras, wandering on the platforms. In a train bound for Palaiseau, he sees a 13-year-old minor, alone in the train, tapping away on his iPhone 11.

The aggressor comes to sit at his side, and explains that he has a knife in his pocket. Threats that force the young boy to give his iPhone and his password to his attacker, before seeing him disappear into the wild. However, a few hours later, the victim’s iCloud account receives a new photo, namely a selfie… taken by the attacker himself.

iCloud to the rescue!

Indeed, visibly proud of his theft, the attacker quickly decided to take a selfie with the freshly stolen iPhone 11. The photo is then immediately sent to the Apple cloud, which will allow law enforcement to identify the attacker. The latter had, two weeks earlier, stolen the AirPods from another victim on another train, bound for Paris.

Presented to a judge this Thursday, January 26, the attacker received a six-month prison sentence, accompanied by a probationary sentence of 18 months.

And that’s not all, since he will also have to pay 369.99 euros to the victim for material damage, as well as the sums of 500 euros for moral damage and 200 euros under article 475- 1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
