Equinor: Fewer Serious Incidents, More Injuries

(CercleFinance.com) – Equinor advises that the frequency of serious incidents decreased at the end of 2021 and that “the number of serious incidents has never been lower than it was in 2021”.

The company however mourns one fatality on an oil tanker in the United States but, due to the unclear circumstances surrounding the death, mention of the accident has been deferred pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The SIF – the frequency of serious incidents per million hours worked – is 0.4 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021.

A total of twelve oil and gas leaks were recorded in 2021, including a leak of hydrogen sulphide and LPG in Mongstad in July 2021, classified as a potential major accident. The other leaks are of a less serious nature, points out Equinor.

Although the frequency of serious accidents fell, that of bodily injuries (ie injuries requiring medical treatment) did not improve and reached 2.4 per million hours worked in the 4th quarter.

“We still have work to do and we must continue to build a stronger and more consistent safety culture across our facilities and factories,” said Jannicke Nilsson, Equinor’s executive vice president for safety, security and durability.
