  • St. Gallen wins the cup semifinals in Yverdon 2:0 and reaches the final for the second time in a row.
  • The two goals from Jérémy Guillemenot and Jordi Quintilla come after the break.
  • In the final on May 15 in Bern, the “Espen” meet Lugano, who beat Lucerne.

At the break, Yverdon coach Uli Forte and the home fans were still in a good mood. The sun was shining in Vaud, 4,500 spectators – more than in the Stade Municipal for 16 years – created a good atmosphere and the home team defied favorites St. Gallen to a 0-0 draw. A little happy, but still.

In the first 45 minutes goalie Kevin Martin kept his colors in the game several times. The 26-year-old shone in particular with a deflected long-range shot by Jordi Quintilla (25th) and a shot by Kwadwo Duah (45th). Not enough came from Yverdon – just like after the tea break. St. Gallen’s “Cup Goalie” Lukas Watkowiak never had to seriously intervene.

Long wait for the 2nd cup victory

In the end, the larger class of the super league team prevailed. Jérémy Guillemenot and Quintilla from a free kick ensured St. Gallen’s deserved away win. For the “Espen” it is the 6th entry into the cup final and the 2nd in a row. In 2021, the eastern Swiss lost the final against Lucerne. “Green-White” has only won the cup once, and that was a long time ago: 1969.

An impressive journey in the cup ended for Yverdon. With the designated champions Zurich and Lausanne, the Vaud people had already been able to defeat 2 higher-class teams. On this Thursday, however, one could not build on these exploits.

The opponent of St. Gallen will be in Wankdorf Lugano on May 15th. The Ticino defeated Lucerne in the semifinals. Already this weekend there will be a final rehearsal in the Super League between the eastern Swiss and the Ticino in St. Gallen.
