Every fifth new registration – for the first time we bought more electric cars than diesel cars

Almost 40 percent increase in battery vehicles saved sales in 2023. The industry is calling for an immediate stop to the strain on drivers.

Despite all the hurdles, e-mobility is picking up speed: with an increase of almost 40 percent to 47,600 units, we bought more electric cars than diesel cars for the first time last year. Their share rose to almost 20 percent of new registrations, and together with hybrid models, 48 percent of new cars even had an alternative drive. There is great reluctance to buy. They ensured that the overall market increased slightly by eleven percent to 239,150 cars, while gasoline and diesel engines continued to lose. A similar level is expected this year too. The industry complains that companies and private individuals are very reluctant to buy, also because some politicians demonize cars. Higher commuter allowances are required. However, many are dependent on cars and mobility must remain affordable. Therefore, a load stop is needed. Specifically, the mineral oil tax should not be increased, but both mileage allowances and commuter allowances would have to increase. The latter has not been adjusted since 2010, but a social scale based on income would make sense. In order to advance e-mobility, the expansion of charging stations would also have to be promoted more and paying for electricity would finally have to become easy, demands dealer spokesman Klaus Edelsbrunner.
