HBO canceled this original sci-fi and horror series after one season when Season 2 was largely developed and almost ready to film.
Produced by Jordan Peele, Lovecraft Country intended to offer a series with an original tone, mixing human drama, politics, fantasy and horror. A true television UFO, the show was finally canceled after a season of 10 episodes when season 2 was already in the pipeline. Explanations.
Lovecraft Country is set in 1950s America. A certain Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors) sets out to find his father with the help of his friend “Leti” (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). Except that their path will be strewn with fantastic monsters… and very real ones.
The series draws its title (and its monsters) from the universe of HP Lovecraft, considered a major author of fantasy, science fiction and horror, but who we also know was deeply racist and anti-Semitic. . The series casts the character of Atticus as a Lovecraft fan to better question these facts.

When it was launched, Lovecraft Country was very well received by critics, but did not immediately have good audiences. It was around her last episodes that she achieved a very honorable score, collecting several Emmy Award nominations along the way.
All this did not save it: in 2021, HBO canceled the series anyway while season 2, which was to be titled Lovecraft Country: Supremacy, was in preparation:

According to several sources of Deadlineit seems that the cancellation resulted from the fact that season 1 was based on a work by Matt Ruff, and season 2 was an entirely original creation that would not have found favor with the cable channel.
With the cancellation now official, designer Misha Green grabbed the social networks to reveal some information about what she had imagined for season 2.

The episodes were to take place in a new world (having the shape of the United States) divided into four parts: the tribal nations of the west, the White Lands, the “New Negro Republic” (New Negro Republic in VO) and the “Commonwealth Jefferson”.
The idea was that the White Lands were invaded by zombies and that season 2 would focus on a new generation of heroes alongside the “old” generation represented by Leti and Atticus. Alas, fans will probably never discover this new universe or the fate of their heroes.
