Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan): “Obi-Wan is a broken man who has lost his faith”

Seventeen years after Star Wars, episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the actor finds his lightsaber for a miniseries on Disney+, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, available Friday, May 27.

How was it different from acting in a fiction Star Wars that George Lucas didn’t realize?

EWAN MCGREGOR: Technology has changed a lot since we shot my last Star Wars, in 2003. From now on, we shoot in a studio called the “volume” (the virtual sets are projected live on the set, editor’s note). It has nothing to do with the green or blue backgrounds (on which the sets were embedded during editing, editor’s note). It’s much better, because you can see and feel the environment you’re supposed to be in.

How did you live the sometimes harsh criticism of the three films Star Wars in which you played Obi-Wan Kenobi (between 1999 and 2005)?

It was sometimes difficult. I felt like I had gone out of my way. As I did not want to be associated only with Star Wars,I continued to do other things. Over the years, I began to meet a new generation. Those movies were made for her, just like the first trilogy was made for mine when I was a kid. I really liked finding the character of Obi-Wan. It was interesting to take on this role again twenty years later.

In what situation do we find him?

The series takes place ten years after Episode III. Obi-Wan is a broken man who has lost his faith. He hides from the Grand Inquisitors who hunt down the last Jedi Knights to slaughter them. They are also looking for children who might demonstrate Force sensitivity. The Empire kidnaps them, but we don’t yet know what it does with them…
