Expensive morning hygiene – women pay a third more for shower gel and the like

The most important items for daily morning hygiene cost women 70 euros, men only pay 53 euros for equivalent products. That’s a third more. The Chamber of Labor criticizes this so-called “pink tax”.

The consumer advocates of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor surveyed the prices of 2,032 hygiene items in the online shops of the drugstore giants for a month. The result: women pay 70 euros for ten selected products, men only 53 euros. So the difference is one third. Disposable razors are particularly expensive for women. These cost 68.1 percent more than for men. Shower gel is a good 50 percent more expensive. The difference is smallest for deodorant sprays at 1.7 percent. “This ‘pink tax’ has to disappear as soon as possible,” demands AK President Peter Eder.
