The fraudsters first get a VoIP number, which they then use to write to their victims. Usually the conversation starts with a seemingly harmless “Sorry, who are you? Found your number in my contacts”. The criminals always remain friendly because they want to win the victims’ trust.

And this is exactly where the crucial point lies. The scammers want to get as much personal information and pictures as possible.
This is how the victim is blackmailed. You should send money, otherwise you would send embarrassing pictures (either originals that were shared on social media or photoshopped fakes) to friends, family or work.
Fortunately, you can protect yourself very well. First of all, ignore unknown numbers and never share personal information with them. You can also report suspicious accounts on WhatsApp. It offers additional protection if you limit the visibility of your profile picture to “My contacts”. If you really have serious problems, contact the police. This can possibly locate the number of the fraudsters.
