FC Bayern pays a hefty sum for a new defender

FC Bayern, plagued by injury problems, is getting additional personnel for the decimated defense. The Munich team is completing the transfer of French full-back Sacha Boey. Galatasaray is pleased with a significant increase in value.

FC Bayern has responded to its problems in defense by signing Frenchman Sacha Boey. The 23-year-old right-back comes from Galatasaray Istanbul and has a contract until 2028. Galatasaray itself announced that the Munich team will pay 30 million euros plus a five million euro bonus. In addition, there is proportional income from two friendly games. Bayern did not provide any details about the transfer fee. Boey is the Munich team’s second winter transfer after central defender Eric Dier, who came from Tottenham Hotspur for around four million euros.

Sports director Christoph Freund spoke of an “absolute dream player. He brings us power and energy.” FC Bayern is “glad to have secured a young player with a lot of potential in Sacha Boey for the long term. He also showed a strong performance in the two Champions League games against us. This means we have not only expanded our squad in terms of width, but also further strengthened in terms of quality,” said CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. For him, says Boey, “a dream comes true. It is an honor for me to be able to play for a global club like FC Bayern.”

Boey moved from Stade Rennes to Galatasaray in 2021 for a transfer fee of 1.15 million euros, where he signed a four-year contract. This season he played 19 games in the Turkish Süper Lig and six in the Champions League. He scored one goal in both competitions.

Boey, who Bayern know well from recent Champions League group stage duels with Galatasaray, was the third candidate for the vacant position at right back after Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United and Nordi Mukiele from Paris St. Germain. Noussair Mazraoui (at the Africa Cup), Konrad Laimer (calf injury) and Joshua Kimmich (shoulder injury) are not available for the Munich team until further notice. Central defender Dayot Upamecano is also out for a longer period of time due to a muscle injury, and offensive player Kingsley Coman also injured his knee in the 3-2 win against FC Augsburg.
