La France Insoumise just like the PCF will distribute FFP2 masks for their candidate’s meetings, considered more protective than surgical masks – but more expensive – while the PCF, LR and LREM will request a health pass and apply gauges. “In view of the evolution of the health situation”, La France insoumise has decided to provide during its public meetings an FFP2 mask which “divides by 100 the potential risk of contamination compared to traditional masks”, according to a press release from the movement .
This initiative will apply “from the next meeting of Jean-Luc Mélenchon scheduled for Nantes on January 16, 2022”, specifies its campaign director Manuel Bompard. “We will distribute an FFP2 mask to each person who will attend our meetings”, also declared the national secretary of the PCF on TF1.
While neither vaccine pass nor gauge will be compulsory for campaign meetings, the Communist candidate will also ask participants to present “proof of being vaccinated or proof of having taken a test before”. They must also maintain a safety distance.
For her part, candidate LR Valérie Pécresse will apply for her meetings the gauges imposed on all other gatherings, deputy Éric Ciotti said on Friday, specifying that the vaccine pass would also be requested. “It is a point of equity. It is out of the question that we impose a gauge on shows and that political meetings do not respect this framework,” he insisted. “Valérie Pécresse will be President of the Republic in a few months. She is therefore already animated by this spirit of responsibility to better protect our fellow citizens”, Eric Ciotti continued.
By announcing Monday limitations for gatherings -2,000 people maximum indoors and 5,000 outdoors, Prime Minister Jean Castex recalled that the French Constitution did not allow the setting of gauges, nor the imposition of a health or vaccination pass, on political meetings and places of worship.

While the presidential party LREM hastened to announce that it was going to apply the gauges in its future meetings, other parties, like La France insoumise by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, from the National Rally of Marine Le Pen or the Reconquest movement! Eric Zemmour, have indicated that they do not intend to limit the number of participants in their public meetings.

As for the socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo, she will apply “all the rules that apply to the Republic” for her public meetings, repeated her spokesperson Mathieu Klein. “Wearing a mask was compulsory and the health pass requested” for previous meetings, recalled the mayor of Nancy. “Be careful that the democratic debate is not confiscated by this peripheral debate”, he nevertheless urged, wishing instead to debate “substantive subjects to resolve the health crisis”.
