Films shown in cinemas should be released earlier on SVOD services: do you understand this choice?

The media timeline is set to get an overhaul, according to a new agreement signed by all parties. Cinematographic works could in particular land much earlier than before on SVoD platforms and on Canal +. Do you understand this choice? This is the subject of our survey of the week.

The media timeline is about to be turned upside down, we learned during the week of January 24. As a reminder, this rule consists of defining a distribution schedule for films released in cinemas. The chronological order is as follows: in theaters, on Canal+ then on SVOD services and television channels.

Canal+ and Netflix would benefit

Until then, a cinematographic work could be found on Canal + eight months after its release in dark rooms, against 36 months on other platforms. These deadlines could therefore evolve according to a new schedule unveiled by theOpinion :

  • Canal+: 6 months after the theatrical release;
  • Netflix: 15 months after theatrical release;
  • Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video: 17 months after theatrical release;
  • TV channels (TF1, France 2, Arte, etc.): 22 months after broadcast in cinemas (exclusive broadcast until the 36th month).

To achieve this, the various actors have undertaken to invest more or less massively in French cinema or the production of “small films”. Race results: Canal+, Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are, in principle, the big winners in history.

SACD opposes the project

Except that the story does not end there, since the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD) defends the interests of the sector and refuses to sign this new agreement, according to a press release published on its site. This greatly complicates the situation.

In this context, do you understand, or not, the new formula of the chronology of the media which could be recorded in the near future?
