- The new head of the Swiss financial market supervisory authority Finma comes from the European Central Bank (ECB).

The 59-year-old German has been Director General at the ECB since 2014. First, he set up banking supervision for the systemically important banks in the Eurozone. As of 2020, he was responsible for all risk areas, in particular credit and liquidity risks, as well as the conception and implementation of stress tests.
Predecessor resigned due to “high stress”.
With Stefan Walter, Finma is gaining an experienced leader with in-depth international financial market experience in banking supervision, according to a statement from the Federal Council.
Urban Angehrn unexpectedly resigned at the beginning of October 2023. The reason given at the time was the “high and long-term burden” of the office, which had health consequences. During Angehrn’s term of office, the CS crisis and the takeover of what was then the second largest Swiss bank by its competitor UBS occurred. Birgit Rutishauser will remain interim director until the end of March 2024 and will then hand over the baton to Stefan Walter.
