“FireLab” extinguishing robot – This is what firefighting should look like in the future

Technical developments in house construction also make the work of the fire brigade more and more complicated in the event of a fire. With the “FireLab” project, the State Fire Brigade Association is taking a big step into the future of firefighting.

The state fire brigade school and the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences have been working together for several years on even more efficient and safe firefighting methods and have launched the “FireLab” project will support firefighting. The danger of use should thus be minimized through scientific research – for example into the fire behavior of new building materials. To this end, the “FireLab” robot will be present and collect data during exercises on the premises of the state fire brigade school, where three fire houses are available. With measuring instruments, cameras, temperature sensors, etc., everything is recorded, right down to the escape of toxins, flows into a database and can then be analyzed by the fire brigade for further use. “In this way, you can constantly refine the technology and tactics of the operation,” says Klaus Tschabuschnig, head of the state fire service school -Project manager Thomas Klinger. And the next project is underway. A forest fire simulation system, which was developed with colleagues from Portugal who have experience of forest fires, will soon be installed at the school’s disaster training grounds.
