Almost exactly two months have passed since Alexander Ritschard’s Grand Slam premiere at Wimbledon. The Zurich native had done very well against Stefanos Tsitsipas in London and was able to win the 3rd set against world number 5.

History repeated itself against Félix Auger-Aliassime: Ritschard was not just an easy sparring partner, but at times demanded everything from the young Canadian. Only a break did not want to succeed in the first two sets – until the 3rd round. The service breakthrough was then enough for the Swiss player to win the set he deserved.

Ritschard proves morality

Even in the 4th set, there wasn’t much to see of the 177 places that separate the two opponents in the world rankings. With the score at 1:1 and service from the Canadian, the tall Ritschard took the lead 40:15. After three breakballs were fended off, it was Auger-Aliassime who was able to submit and in the following game Ritschard was able to take the serve.

Although the 28-year-old was subsequently broken a second time, the Swiss player’s resistance was not yet broken. He recovered a break when his Canadian opponent served to win the match. Only after 3:05 hours was the defeat a fact.

The fact that Ritschard missed the sensation after three victories in qualifying was partly due to the lack of efficiency. The world number 185 earned a total of 12 break points, but was only able to use two of them. Auger-Aliassime’s rate was significantly better at 50 percent (4/8).
