Five-figure damage – Internet fraudster played captain and fooled woman

A fraudster investigated by the police, a Nigerian (29), pretended to be a Viennese ship’s captain on a dating platform and turned the head of a Salzburg woman (39). The man feigned problems with his ship and got his victim to transfer money to him seven times in different accounts. Damage sum: a five-digit amount.

Due to the trust gained, the Salzburg firm believed that the supposed captain of the ship had technical problems and needed spare parts for his ship, the police report said. The woman transferred money to the man seven times: in German, Spanish and Belgian accounts. The cybercrime group of the Salzburg police was able to investigate the alleged fraudster using forensic evaluations of the emails and the chat logs: The Nigerian (29) was reported for fraud.
