Dozens of yachts moor in the harbor in the bay of Kastela. The ships here on the Croatian coast are worth millions. Or were they – until luxury goes up in flames on Saturday evening.
The fire breaks out on a yacht around 8:30 p.m. The crew in charge is still trying to put out the fire. To no avail – the ropes that fasten the ship to the harbor blow.
The yacht starts moving, setting fire to several other ships. When the fire brigade arrives, the affected part of the port is shrouded in thick smoke, which makes it difficult to extinguish the fire.
Damage «extremely high»
Only an hour later, the emergency services were able to locate three burning ships and pull them away from the others to prevent the flames from spreading. The fire is then under control and can be extinguished, reports local media.
A total of five ships flared completely in the inferno, and 18 others were damaged. The damage is “extremely high”, say the authorities. Fortunately, no one was injured. The local police are investigating how the fire broke out. (hah)
