Flick “was a crowning achievement”: Gerland no longer wants to be a coach

Flick “was a coronation”
Gerland no longer wants to be a coach

Hermann Gerland has worked with many coaching legends. But the last Bayern coach was the “coronation” for him: Hansi Flick. Is this hymn of praise an indication of further collaboration between the two at the DFB? The 66-year-old weighs it down.

After leaving as assistant coach at the German soccer champions FC Bayern Munich, Hermann Gerland praised his previous boss Hansi Flick in the highest tones. “It was a crowning achievement for me to have seen Hansi Flick as a coach at Bayern,” said the 66-year-old on the podcast “Meine Bayern-Woche” on Sport1.

He has worked with some of the greatest coaches in the world, and Hansi has had extraordinary success – seven titles in 18 months, more could not really be. “He has outstanding skills. The way he treats the players and his staff is exceptional,” stressed Gerland.

According to his own statements, the fact that he is leaving the German record champions after 20 years has nothing to do with the commitment of Julian Nagelsmann as Flick’s successor. He goes of his own free will and has a good relationship with the 33-year-old. “For me, Julian Nagelsmann is a first-class coach,” said the coach nicknamed “Tiger”. He even wanted to bring him to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as an assistant coach five years ago. “I canceled because I was with Bayern, with the best club with the best coaches,” said Gerland, who is considered to be the discoverer of world champions Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller and Bastian Schweinsteiger, among others.

Gerland left it open where the former VfL Bochum defender will go in the future. “I will return to the football business. But I will no longer be an assistant coach and I will no longer be a coach,” he said. It is also possible that he will follow the future national coach Hansi Flick to the German Football Association (DFB). “Who knows. I haven’t had any conversations with anyone,” he said when asked.
