Cakes, biscuits, stollen … Now at Christmas time, flour has become an indispensable part of our kitchen. All the more shocking are the results that a current eco-test shows.

Even if we don't hoard the flour from the supermarkets, we are consuming a lot of it right now. Because whether Christmas cookies, cakes or other delicacies – the Christmas season simply invites you to bake. And then it's good to have a few packs in stock. However, you should choose the right brand, as a current eco-test now shows.

What was tested

28 wheat and 22 spelled flours were examined. The good news: More than half of them were rated "very good". The bad: about as many types of flour were contaminated with mold. Whole wheat flours were particularly affected. In high doses, these fungi can cause diarrhea and vomiting, but luckily such amounts have not been found in any flour. In addition, the researchers found (rather harmless) traces of mineral oil in two thirds of the flours – in three greatly increased doses. Where does the mineral oil come from? The scientists suspect that it may have migrated from the packaging into the flour. And, unfortunately, that wasn't all: Finally, some varieties also contained pesticides and a growth regulator.

What does Öko-Test recommend and what not?

These varieties were rated "very good":

Alnatura spelled flour type 630

Antersdorfer wheat flour type 550, Biokreis

Aurora organic spelled flour type 630

On the other hand, the stamp "insufficient" was given:

Bio Sonne organic flour spelled type 1050 from Norma

"Unsatisfactory" were:

Organic Wheat Whole Grain Flour, Naturland by Rewe

K-Bio spelled flour Type 630 from Kaufland

Finally, something positive

The carcinogenic mycotoxin OTA, which can develop in flour during the storage process, was not found in any of the tested products. Neither flour contained traces of glyphosate. Well, that's something …
