Fog disabled heli – rockfall injured climbers (45) seriously

A mountaineer got caught in a rockfall on the Hochgall at almost 3000 meters above sea level on Wednesday. A stone hit the man on the lower leg, walking on was unthinkable. The injured person informed the emergency services, and a complex rescue operation began.

On Wednesday morning, a 45-year-old Austrian climbed in the municipality of St. Jakob i. D. alone from the Barmerhütte in the direction of Hochgall. At around 12.15 p.m., the alpinist fell into a rockfall at an altitude of approx. 2950 m in a gully between the Hochgall and the Barmerspitze. Fog disabled helicopter The man was hit by a stone on the left lower leg and was seriously injured. The injured person independently made the alpine emergency call and the Antholz mountain rescue service (South Tyrol) was alerted. Due to the weather conditions, the mountain rescuers from South Tyrol could only be flown to an altitude of approx. 2600 m using the “Aiut Alpin” emergency helicopter and had to climb up to the injured person on foot support requested. Because a helicopter rescue was not possible due to the weather, the man was brought out of the foggy areas on land until a police helicopter rescue was possible. The injured person was then taken to the district hospital in Lienz. The Altholz/South Tyrol mountain rescue service was deployed with 13 emergency services, the Defereggental mountain rescue service with 4 emergency services, a mountain rescue doctor, two alpine police officers, the “Aiut Alpin” (Italy) emergency doctor helicopter and the police helicopter “Dragon-fly”.
