For consumers and businesses
Gas price has already risen significantly in the first half of the year

According to the Federal Statistical Office, consumers felt the consequences of the Russian war of aggression early this year. The authority reports an increase of 17.7 percent in the first half of the year. For companies, the price increase was even higher.

Gas prices for consumers in Germany rose by 17.7 percent in the first half of the year as a result of the Ukraine war. According to the Federal Statistical Office, private households paid an average of 8.04 cents per kilowatt hour for natural gas.

Electricity cost consumers an average of 33.50 cents per kilowatt hour, 1.9 percent more than in the second half of 2021. Among non-household customers, i.e. primarily companies and authorities, the price increase for gas fell by +38.9 percent significantly higher, with electricity they paid 19.3 percent more.

The price increases for electricity and natural gas on the energy exchanges since mid-2020 are now also having a greater impact on prices for private households. Due to the longer-term contracts, the increases are even lower than for companies or authorities. In the first six months of this year, they paid an average of 19.86 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity without VAT and other deductible taxes. These non-household customers paid an average of 6.43 cents per kilowatt hour for natural gas.

Despite a significant increase in energy and sales costs, electricity prices for private households rose only slightly by 1.9 percent in the second half of 2021. The reduction in the EEG surcharge had a particularly price-dampening effect. The tax burden on electricity prices fell by an average of 15.4 percent. On the other hand, the costs for energy and the sale of electricity rose by 35.6 percent for all private households. Above all, households with an annual consumption of more than 15,000 kilowatt hours had to pay significantly more than in the previous half year (+7.7 percent for the total price and +65.0 percent for energy and sales).
