Google will soon allow users to filter ads targeted to them.

It is therefore practical to avoid certain sensitive subjects such as marriage, children, diet, etc.

Tools to control advertising at Google

Soon, the advertisements that appear on YouTube or on Gmail will be less sensitive. Indeed, Google announces a new tool that will allow the user to better ” control » the advertisements that he will be confronted with during his wanderings on the web.

Via a new tool, users will therefore be able to restrict ads from various categories, namely alcohol, dating, gambling, pregnancy / parenthood and weight loss, and this, both on YouTube and on Gmail. Ad filters won’t apply to Google search results or Google Shopping, but a spokesperson has confirmed this may happen in the future.

For a long time, targeted advertisements have been criticized for being particularly intrusive, even harmful to certain users. It is difficult for a person who is unable to have a child to be constantly confronted with advertisements for maternity clothes, for example, or for a compulsive gambler to be constantly tempted by advertisements highlighting games of chance.

Transparency and control have always been a priority for us, which is why we are expanding our tools by allowing you to choose to see fewer ads about pregnancy and parenting, dating and weight loss. We will continue to listen to user feedback and investigate categories to which we can expand this feature in the future. “, explained Karin Hennessy, product manager at Google.
