Maximilian Günther (24) clinched his first Formula E win of the season. The Oberstdorfer in the BMW surprisingly prevailed on Saturday at the spectacular ePrix in New York against the French Jean-Eric Vergne. Günther, who started from fourth position, only took the lead shortly before the end.
“We had a good starting position with the second row on the grid,” says Günther on Sat.1. The 24-year-old continues: “But overtaking wasn’t that easy. I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment. I knew the longer the race, the better my chances. “
Lucas di Grassi completes the podium. The three-time DTM champion Rene Rast, who started from position 22, made up twelve places in the tenth race of the season and ended up in tenth place. Formula E is the very first racing series that is allowed to drive in New York.
Buemi in 6th place
Sébastien Buemi (32) competes for the podium for a long time. In the end he has to be content with rank 6. It’s been a racing weekend to forget for Edoardo Mortara (34) so far. The man from Geneva struggled with technical problems in qualifying and so starts from the back row.
Not much can be done from there. Mortara is still in 14th place. There are no World Championship points for it, but he remains the leader with his 72 points. However, the Dutchman Robin Frijns (also 72) and the Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne (68) are hot on his heels.
