Frenchman Michel Combes becomes Masayoshi Son’s right-hand man at the head of SoftBank

BRIEF // Michel Combes has been the chairman of SoftBank Group International since 2020, where he manages all of the Japanese giant’s investments outside of the Vision Fund. Masayoshi Son, the boss of SoftBank, has just assigned him new functions.

Michel Combes takes the lead at SoftBank. The French leader, who has been the president of SoftBank Group International since 2020, where he manages all of the Japanese giant’s investments outside of the Vision Fund, will take over part of the duties of Marcelo Claure, the director of operations of the Japanese conglomerate, who comes to resign. Indeed, Michel Combes has been appointed Managing Director of SoftBank Group International and therefore becomes the right arm of Masayoshi Son, the ubiquitous CEO of SoftBank.

This is a great promotion for this historic telecom boss, who worked for Sprint, Altice and Alcatel-Lucent in particular. Since his arrival at SoftBank, he has notably distinguished himself by saving WeWork from bankruptcy, completing the merger of American mobile operators Sprint and T-Mobile and launching a $5 billion fund in Latin America.
