After the assassination of Haiti’s President Moïse, the police initially spoke of four alleged perpetrators who had been killed. The next day she presented numerous other arrested persons, some of whom were still on the run.

At least 28 people were directly involved in the murder of the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, according to police. “We arrested 15 Colombians and two Americans of Haitian origin,” said the chief of the national police, Léon Charles. The foreigners came into the country to kill the president. Three more Colombians are said to have been killed and another eight are still on the run.

Moïse was shot dead in his home in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday night. His wife Martine, who was injured in the attack, was flown to Miami for treatment. She is out of danger.

On Wednesday, the police had spoken of four attackers killed. According to the police chief, “weapons and materials used by the attackers have been confiscated”.

The Caribbean state, which is already marked by instability and poverty, is now threatening to drift further into chaos. Haiti now has neither a president nor a functioning parliament. The incumbent head of government and his nominated successor each claim the office for themselves. Haiti’s election minister Mathias Pierre has meanwhile declared that both the presidential election and the constitutional referendum should go ahead on September 26th as planned. “The election was not for Jovenel Moise as president. It was seen as a necessity to stabilize the country and the political system,” said Matias Pierre.
