Game news The future video game from the creator of BioShock is very intriguing at the State of Play PS5

Remember this name: Judas! It’s that of the brand new game from Ken Levine, illustrious developer behind the BioShock saga, which was revealed a little more last night during State of Play… and there is reason to be as fascinated as it is intrigued.

BioShock, the one, the only

In video games, there are certain creators that we particularly remember: Peter Molyneux, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, Glen Schofield… In fact, the list is long and they all have their place in the Pantheon of the Tenth Art. And in the pile, we clearly must cite Ken Levine, an American who first cut his teeth on the legendary System Shock 2 at the end of the 90s to truly shine with his own license: BioShock.

Released in 2006 under the aegis of its new studio Irrational Games, this cult FPS quickly earned an excellent reputation for its explosive gameplay, its absolutely fascinating universe and its rich, surprising narrative with philosophical echoes. Enough to motivate 2K Games to quickly make a sequel (without Ken Levine, moreover) before the developer takes over the reins for the great BioShock Infinite, published in 2013 and coming with its DLC to bring the history of BioShock full circle.

A renowned saga which has disappeared from the radar for fourteen years now: it must be said that at the time, the development of Infinite was particularly chaotic and winding, with crunch in support and a direct push to close the studio once the game was released. We strongly advise you to take a look at our recently released JV Legends, dedicated to Ken Levine and the BioShock series. It’s happening just below.

Big looks of a BioShock 4

But Ken Levine is a creative at heart and he certainly didn’t intend to stop there, with or without 2K Games. A year ago, in a State of Play, we learned that his next game was called Judas with a captivating first trailer: the title thus takes the form of an FPS and is developed by Levine’s new studio, Ghost StoryGames. Last night, again during Sony’s State of Play, Judas revealed itself a little more with a new trailer, to be found in our video player available at the start of the article.

And yes, oh yes, Judas looks very much like what a new BioShock could have looked like. We find a similar artistic direction there with this very particular character design, these atypical enemies and above all this duality between wielding firearms in one hand and elemental powers in the other.

Above all, the environment once again seems to act as a character in its own right: after the art-deco underwater city and the 19th century aerial city of BioShock, Judas will take us into space within Mayflower, a space city where “residents were trained to spy on and denounce each other at the first offense.” Over there, machines play a preponderant, even dominant, role in society : they run commerce, art, government and you, in the middle of it all, being targeted of a plot that places you at the head of a revolution.

Ken Levine

In a very recent article posted on the PlayStation Blog, Ken Levine focuses on a specific element: storytelling. Judas would suggest “a tailor-made experience in which the decisions and the evolution of the story depend only on the player”the latter being at the origin of every event in history. The developer promises a plethora of strong characters, with even the possibility of influencing their lives “in a way never before seen in his games”. This is what makes you want it.

Although Judas is currently being promoted by Sony, it will not be a PS5 exclusive since it is also expected on PC and Xbox Series. Unfortunately, there is no release date to be announced at the moment, but we will obviously keep you informed as soon as we know more.

By the way, remember that a new BioShock has been in development for years within Cloud Chamber, a new studio founded at 2K Games. For the moment, the project has still not been revealed but the design would be… “chaotic”.
