In the jungle of games released on Steam, there are sometimes gems hidden there, under the bush. This is the case of this game with a possibly generic name but which really excited us.
RoboQuest – literally, “the robot’s quest” – does that mean anything to you? No, of course not… With a name like that, the title from developer RyseUp doesn’t have much chance of standing out from the crowd, and yet, it deserves it. It’s a very fast-paced first-person shooter (or fast FPS, like Ghostrunner) but rogue-lite version. In other words, you start the adventure again and again; after each failure, you obtain improvements and skills that make your life a little easier until you complete all the levels without dying. A mixture of genres that we don’t see every day and which is certainly the subject of a confidential but truly enthusiastic welcome. On Steam, based on nearly 10,000 reviews, Roboquest gets 95% positive reviews. Everything is available on the Valve platform (€24.99) | via PC-console Game Pass. We played there for a few hours.
Well-oiled mechanics
RyseUp reminds us of the simple pleasures of life: rushing, jumping at full speed, and above all squeezing the trigger until exhaustion. Eh yes, the sensations of Roboquest are frankly excellent and will make you want to play the games again and again… Here, the feeling of the movements is close to that of a Ghostrunner. It’s fast, fluid – you can slide, double-jump, or even sprint all the time! Everything you need to dodge the shots of the many robots that will stand in your way. Because there are lots of people. Unlike its cyberpunk cousin, Roboquest doesn’t throw you into the afterlife at the slightest misstep (even if health can drop quickly in Normal mode). You have a life bar at the bottom left of the screen – which can recharge if you collect green orbs dropped by each defeated opponent. But be careful, these items disappear quickly, often forcing you to get closer rather than staying at a distance.
With that alone, the game of RyseUp pushes us to get into the heat of the action, to juggle different enemies and avoid a whole bunch of projectiles (it sometimes turns almost into bullet hell). So we already find ourselves doing some incredible choreography, but that was without counting on tea good idea from Roboquest. You can, like a certain mustachioed plumber, bounce on the head of an opposing robot and inflict some damage in the process. The whole thing can downright kill the most modest creatures, but above all allows you to step over the fray and, with good timing, reach a neighboring platform… With training, the choreographies of Roboquest can become super satisfying, if that. is not exhilarating. There are also rails on which you can slide (also very pleasant). Finally, the level design is mastered and never breaks the exhilaration of movement.
Largely sufficient coating
In other words : Roboquest’s basic foundation is super solid, and the best part is that the rest follows just as well…The sensations of shoot, if not incredible, are good; the weapons are diverse and sometimes quite original (beyond the classics, there are bows, crossbows, and cannons of all kinds); the bestiary is certainly simple but so far it seems sufficiently varied; and the parties evolve failure after failure. In addition to the numerous modules that gradually improve your hero, RyseUp offers 6 classes here. During this session, we unlocked two: the first focused on defense is capable of deploying an impenetrable shield for a few moments, the second is specialized in firearms and has a shotgun and a rocket as a special. We’re willing to bet that the other shapes are just as ingenious. Another good point to finish, Roboquest can be discovered entirely with 2 players online… In the end, we will just regret a small lack of identity, with an artistic direction reminiscent of Borderlands and Overwatch. But for the rest, it’s very good. In short, try Roboquest (demo available on PC).
