Garbage collectors’ strike in Marseille: a third mobilization in 4 months and residents at the end of their rope

This is the third strike in four months. Right in the center of Marseille, as in all areas of the city, household waste invades public roads.

“It’s fed up, because when you go on foot or in a stroller on the sidewalks, there is no more room and soon it will be the cars that will no longer have room”, laments a local resident at the microphone of NEWS.

“There are lots of rats, I see them running, it’s disgusting,” says another woman interviewed by our journalists.

On January 18, Force Ouvrière (FO), the majority union, embarked on a new standoff with the metropolis to obtain a bonus for work done on Sundays and public holidays.

Bring the trash cans to the decision-making syndicate

This is the third mobilization in four months. In this context, some Marseillais have decided to express their exasperation in their own way.

“We called, calmly, to bring our garbage back to the FO union. It’s enough to be permanently held hostage. We are tired of simply not being able to walk on a sidewalk properly”, explained to CNEWS Sarah Bourgeois, creator of the Facebook group “Marseille trash life”.

On social networks, dozens of Marseillais responded favorably to the call. They should thus take turns all morning of this Saturday, January 29, with their garbage cans, in front of the headquarters of Force Ouvrière.
