Generations survey – young and old demand: “Eliminate prejudices”

The younger generation often lacks understanding of the older generation and vice versa. But what do they want from each other?

The young are inconsiderate and have no respect for older people, the old refuse new ideas – clichés like these are widespread and are the reason for a generational conflict that is often perceived. The cracks have become even deeper due to Corona. But are the rifts insurmountable? At the same time, we asked young and older people what they would like from the other generation. Acceptance of a new worldview For the young, the focus is on the corona issue. They also ask the elderly to get vaccinated so that they can finally get their youth back. “At the moment we are missing out on all the experiences that cannot be made up for,” says Christoph (17). The so-called “millennials” also want the older generation to accept new worldviews. “Prejudices should be eliminated,” says Alexander (18). But the role model effect is also emphasized, as is mutual learning. The topic of sustainability is also coming to the fore. The young call on the older generation to live more consciously in order to guarantee future generations the same quality of life. Respect, courage and togetherness On the wish list of the older generation, however, there are values such as respect, togetherness and courage. Many also want active youth. That the young people show courage again and have a strong opinion of their own. “The younger generation grew up carefree, Corona presents them with new challenges that they have to overcome, but they will grow with it,” says Gertrude (69). And finally, the wish is expressed that there will be a mix. Young and old people have to get closer to each other again.
