PARIS (Reuters) – Gérard Larcher (Les Républicains) was unsurprisingly re-elected on Monday for a fifth term as president of the Senate, a week after the elections which renewed the upper house of the French Parliament by half.

He was re-elected in the first round with 218 votes, against three other candidates.

Aged 74, the elected official from Yvelines chaired the Senate from 2008 to 2011 then, continuously, from 2014.

The Republicans are in the majority at the Luxembourg Palace, where the left is the main opposition force and where the National Rally had three senators elected in the indirect ballot of September 24.
