German Chancellor Scholz calls on Turkey to refrain from provoking Greece – spokesperson

ANKARA, June 1 (Reuters) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Turkey to show restraint on Greece as tensions between the two countries have escalated, a German government spokesman said on Wednesday.

“The Chancellor is of the opinion that, given the current situation, it is necessary that all NATO allies stand together and refrain from any provocation between them,” said the spokesman during a meeting. Berlin press conference.

“Invading Greek airspace and flying over the Greek islands is not acceptable, it seems counterproductive and contrary to the spirit of the alliance,” he added.

Germany is committed to resolving the issues between Greece and Turkey within the framework of a private dialogue and on the basis of international law, while stressing that “we cannot accept the questioning of the sovereignty of the Member States of the European Union,” the spokesman said.
