Here is the turn of Getty Images to announce the deployment of its own generative artificial intelligence. The company didn’t need to go very far to train its model and simply used the immense amount of works available in its library.
Art-generating AIs are growing in number, as evidenced by the recent deployment of the third iteration of DALL-E by OpenAI. Getty Images has long been against this technology, even going so far as to file a complaint against Stability AI for copyright infringement, on the grounds that its Stable Diffusion image generator used Getty photos without authorization. In 2022, the image bank also banned the distribution and purchase of images generated by artificial intelligence.
Getty to pay artists whose images resulted in model
With Generative AI by Getty Images, the company wishes to protect itself from any legal turmoil. It ensures that the creators of the images incorporated into the algorithm, such as designers or photographers, will receive financial compensation for their contribution to the training datasets, without indicating the amount of this compensation.
“ This will be a share of every dollar of revenue generated by the service. We will not pay them a one-time fee. This is an ongoing revenue stream for these contributors, based on the content they provide to us », Specifies Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images.
Art-generating AIs are the subject of significant criticism from artistic communities. Often, they are trained on works coming from the Internet, and therefore from creators, without giving them credit. Some of them are also capable of copying the style of a specific artist.
Not possible to create anything and everything
Images created with the Getty Images tool will benefit from a watermark which indicates that the content comes from an AI. To develop its system, the company collaborated with NVIDIA to leverage its Edify model, available in the Picasso generative AI model library. The American firm’s chips power the vast majority of generative AI models in the world.
To prevent it from being used for malicious purposes, Getty prevents the AI from responding to certain queries. For example, prompts containing the names of real people produce no results. The tool will be priced separately from the standard Getty Images subscription, while pricing will be based on order volume. Users will own perpetual, worldwide and unlimited rights to the image they have created.
In this way, Getty Images adopts a model similar to that of Adobe with Firefly. The AI was also trained on the creative giant’s stock of licensed images.
