Marco Odermatt has won both giant slaloms this season. The Swiss top star quickly became a top favorite for the discipline rankings. And in the overall World Cup, the 24-year-old is in first place – despite a disappointing 19th place in the Super-G in Val Gardena on Friday. Nevertheless, it was clear – Odermatt wanted to attack again in the giant slalom. He wanted victory!
After the 1st run it looks good. The dominator of the giant slaloms so far gave full throttle from the start. Odermatt raced down the slope. In the end, only two hundredths were missing from the leader Mathieu Faivre, who furiously mastered the route in front of the Swiss top star. A great starting point for the 2nd run.
Gino Caviezel was also convincing. Like Odermatt, the Bündner started wonderfully, but then mistakes crept into his journey. Nevertheless: In the end, the gap was limited. With 10th place after the 1st run, Caviezel can still get a good placement. Loïc Meillard showed a run without mistakes, but overall he was just too slow (17th). At the finish he just shook his head in disappointment. He knew: more would have been possible.
Murisier with a wild ride
And Justin Murisier? The man who made it onto the podium for the first time a year ago in Val Gardena (he was third behind Alexis Pinturault and Atle McGrath) attacked fully. After the third split, he even lost the schooner on his right hand, but it worked. In the end it was 8th place for him after an absolutely wild ride.
In short: It all looks like a happy day for the Swiss ski fans. Odermatt knows that too. He told the SRF: “It’s one of the most beautiful giant slaloms and, like last year, the slope is perfect, it’s fun to ski. I feel good almost everywhere now. I struggled a little last year on aggressive snow, but now it works. I’ll try to drive like this again in the second run. ” Caviezel said: “It was a dedicated ride but maybe a little too direct, so it knocked me out every now and then.”
