Sara Hector doesn’t give the competition a chance at the giant slalom in Jasna. Lara Gut-Behrami takes the lead again in the discipline rankings.

The podium

  • 1. Sara Hector (SWE) 2:17.80 minutes
  • 2. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) +1.52 seconds
  • 3. Alice Robinson (NZL) +2.71

When Sara Hector took almost 3 seconds off Lara Gut-Behrami in the first run, it was already clear: This was going to be a special race. In fact, the gaps remained large – not even Mikaela Shiffrin, who lost exactly one second, could come close to the outstanding Swede. At the other end of the scale was Slovakian Sophia Polak, 11.53 seconds behind. After the first run, the cut to make it to the second run was 5 seconds over the best time.

Accordingly, Hector was able to tackle the second run with ease. The Swede didn’t let anything go wrong and confidently won the fifth World Cup victory of her career, the first this winter. She even extended her lead – in the end there were 1.5 seconds or more between Hector and her competitors.

Behind the 31-year-old, Shiffrin and New Zealander Alice Robinson made it onto the podium. The gap to the rear remained large – Zrinka Ljutic followed the podium riders in fourth place, already 4.33 seconds behind the winning time.

The Swiss in the points

Gut-Behrami was once again the best Swiss woman this winter. Although the Ticino woman clearly missed the podium, she was still happy – thanks to her 6th place, she took the lead in the discipline rankings again. Camille Rast also delivered a convincing performance. The Valaisian demonstrated her strong form and finished in the top 10.

Comebacker Simone Wild showed a solid performance and was happy about 17th place when she returned from injury. Jasmina Suter scored World Cup points in the giant slalom for the fourth time in her career.

The early drama

After Federica Brignone with start number 1 had not made it to the finish, Local hero Petra Vlhova also fell. The race could only continue after a long interruption. After only 4 riders, 2 athletes from the top 5 in the giant slalom ranking were no longer there.

The Austrians weren’t there either. Only one person, Ricarda Haaser, made it into the second run – where she was eliminated after setting the fastest time.

This is how it continues

There is a slalom in Jasna on Sunday. After a speed weekend, the next giant slalom will take place on Tuesday, January 30th in Kronplatz.
