Gilmore Girls: What about another sequel to the series?

The "Gilmore Girls" celebrate their 20th anniversary. Is the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore really over after the revival?

The first episode of the series "Gilmore Girls" was seen on October 5, 2000 on US television. The life of the single parent Lorelai Gilmore (played by Lauren Graham, 53) and her teenage daughter Rory (played by Alexis Bledel, 39) in the fictional US town of Stars Hollow delighted an audience of millions. After seven seasons, 2007 was over – until the streaming service Netflix brought back the "Gilmore Girls". The four-part mini-series "A New Year" was released in November 2016. Since then, there have been rumors about another sequel.

Big revival – but one is missing

The series "Gilmore Girls" accompanies the mother-daughter duo through lots of ups and downs. Lorelai struggles with the pitfalls of love and struggles through professional life, always under the eagle eyes of her wealthy parents Emily (Kelly Bishop, 76) and Richard (Edward Herrmann, 1943-2014). Rory first has to grapple with snobbish classmates at a private school and then find the right path at an elite university. Not to forget her love life, which causes one or the other scandal. The series ends with Rory graduating from college and setting off into professional life.

"Gilmore Girls: A New Year" starts a few years after the original series. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino (54) and her husband Dan Palladino had retired after the sixth season and are now returning. The four episodes, which are more like TV films, ignore some of the events of the seventh season. In return, they take up the sad loss of the actor Edward Herrmann. He died in 2014 of complications from cancer. The mourning for him and the effects of his death on his series family are among the main strands of the miniseries.

Can it go on after Gilmore Girls: A New Year?

At the end of "A New Year" they are finally pronounced: the infamous last four words. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino knew it from the start and was able to realize it thanks to the revival. Rory informs her mother that she is pregnant. Since then, fans on the Internet have been puzzling over who the baby's father is: Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry, 43), Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia, 43) or is it an insignificant one-night stand? All those involved have so far been silent. Maybe because there should be another sequel after all?

This is still not completely ruled out. Most recently, Amy Sherman-Palladino stated in a podcast at the end of 2019 that she was "absolutely open" to producing more "Gilmore Girls" supplies. She is in close contact with the actors. "It's about nothing else than that we need the right story, the right format and the right time," she admitted. Because "A New Year" was not planned, but rather a "stroke of fate". For all fans of the "Gilmore Girls" it still means: wait and don't give up hope.
