Glyphosate causes premature births

According to an American study, pregnant women gave birth prematurely after exposure to glyphosate.

Is glyphosate responsible for early births? This is the hypothesis formulated by American researchers and published in the scientific journal Environmental Research. This study was conducted on 163 pregnant women who tested the level of glyphosate in urine samples taken during the second trimester of pregnancy. This substance, contained in many herbicides, was detected in 94% of the samples analyzed.

Among these women, 94 of them completed their term and the remaining 69 gave birth prematurely. The researchers then noticed that the latter had been more exposed to glyphosate. There is therefore a link between shorter gestation period and the presence of this substance in the mother. They point out, however, that larger-scale studies are needed to confirm its role in the health of expectant mothers and that of premature infants.

Last May, researchers at the University of Michigan came to the same conclusions. Their study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, had been carried out on 250 pregnant women in Puerto Rico. According to their report, if a woman is exposed to glyphosate during her 7th month of pregnancy, the risk of early delivery would increase by 30% to 70%.

If more extensive analyzes were to confirm this new problem linked to glyphosate, it would add to the long list already existing of the harmful effects of the substance present, among others, in many herbicides of the Monsanto brand.
