GM offers $7,500 bonus for EVs that lose tax credit

WASHINGTON, Jan 3 (Reuters) – Automaker General Motors said on Wednesday it would offer a $7,500 bonus for its electric vehicles (EVs) that lost a U.S. government tax credit this week.

The US Department of the Treasury issued guidelines in December that took effect Monday that detail new battery supply requirements, with the aim of favoring local manufacturing, at the expense of China.

GM told its dealers it would provide the equivalent amount of the tax credit “for any vehicle that becomes ineligible due to the new guidelines.”

Other vehicles losing the credit include the Volkswagen ID.4, the Nissan Leaf, some Tesla Model 3s and the Ford Mach-E, the US Treasury said. (Reporting David Shepardson, French version Nathan Vifflin, editing by Kate Entringer)
