Not only are gangsters an important theme in Martin Scorsese’s films, religion also plays a major role for the director. His follow-up to “Killers of the Flower Moon” is therefore about Jesus.

Even though Martin Scorsese is better known for films like “Goodfellas”, “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “Taxi Driver” or “Killers of the Flower Moon”, there are repeated references in his filmography to how important it is to the director the religion is.
“The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Silence” were certainly not among Scorsese’s greatest successes, but the Oscar winner can now freely choose his projects and will again choose a film in 2024 that focuses on Jesus Christ.

The film, which is scheduled to be shot at the end of the year and does not yet have an official title, is based on the book “A Life of Jesus” by Shūsaku Endō, who already wrote the original for “Silence”.
Unlike Scorsese’s last films, which were almost three and a half hours long, his Jesus project will only last around 80 minutes. The story Scorsese has in mind is not about Jesus himself, but about the role he plays in the present. Here’s what he told the Los Angeles Times:
I’m trying to find a new way to make religion more accessible and take away the negative connotations associated with organized religion. When you say the word ‘religion’ today, everyone is in turmoil because it has failed in many ways. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the original impulse was wrong.
Let’s go back. Let’s just think about it. You may reject it. But it could make a difference in how you live your life – even if you reject it. Don’t just reject it. That’s all I’m talking about. And I say this as someone who will be 81 in a few days.

Some Scorsese fans suspect that Andrew Garfield, who starred in “Silence,” recently left Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” project to star in Scorsese’s Jesus film. We’ll definitely find out later this year whether he will actually be part of the cast. For now, anyone who missed “Killers of the Flower Moon” in theaters can look forward to its streaming release on January 12, 2024 on Apple TV+.
