God of War is a hit on PC, other studios would demand ports from Sony


Almost four years after its release on PlayStation 4, was God of War going to raise the crowds when it arrived on PC? In view of the record he has just smashed like an enemy skull, the answer is clear.

The beat’em all without transition has just signed the best launch of a Playstation Studios game on PC, with a peak of 73,529 simultaneous players recorded during its first weekend on the SteamDB database. So certainly, the competition is not so numerous for the moment, since only Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn serve as a comparator, but the performance remains to be welcomed.

This small victory is important in more ways than one, since in the absence of consoles available on the shelves, a publisher recently claimed that Sony’s “historical” would gradually turn away from the PS5 to prefer this good old pc. The manufacturer seems to have already sharpened its strategy in this area, since last July it bought the Dutch studio Nixxes, specializing in PC game ports.

So, inevitably, the God of War case raises questions, and our colleagues from Game Informer took advantage of a one-on-one with director Cory Barlog to discuss the likelihood of one day seeing the long-awaited God of War Ragnarök land on Steam or the Epic Games Store:

I have no idea. Right now, we’re taking things one at a time, observing the results. Are people enjoying the experience? Was the porting done well? Is there anything we did wrong? But in the end, it’s mostly Sony’s decision.

But precisely, many players are wondering how Sony finally set its sights on God of War? Mr. Barlog offered us his version of the facts, not without hinting that other firts-party studios would be just as ready to see their games find another audience:

I think it was the result of a collective effort carried out by all the in-house studios. We ended up reaching this tipping point: by dint of suggesting it again and again, the porting ended up being done. It’s a long process, and as a studio we are already wondering about continuing with this strategy.
