Good idea of ​​the day: Bluesky will let its users configure their own moderation settings

Moderation on Blue Sky becomes open-source with a tool called Ozone. It allows users to create their own filters and offer them to the rest of the community.

If, one day, you create a social network, there is one aspect that you will not want to neglect: moderation. Whatever Mr. Musk says, monitoring posts and messages published by users is essential, for a whole bunch of reasons. It has even become an increasingly critical hub for companies in the sector.

Beyond recruiting dedicated teams and developing efficient algorithms, any idea is welcome. And, the last one from Bluesky is particularly interesting.

Moderation à la carte

When it comes to content appreciation, we are not all equal. Some people don’t necessarily want to come across posts about migration policies, others have phobias that should not be triggered by the slightest scrolling. Rival social network X.com (formerly Twitter) aims to address these and a whole host of other situations with a new feature.

In fact, its users will be able to control more precisely the publications that appear on their news feed, by selecting moderation services created by the rest of the community or by themselves. This open-source tool, Ozone, will allow certain types of text and images to be labeled, based on their content.

Subscribers, for their part, will be able to report posts that have passed the filters set up by these personalized services. Has an image of a spider landed in your news feed, but these beasts give you chills? Hop, in one click, it is hidden and sent to the appropriate person to be examined.

Of course, Ozone complements the moderation already in place on Bluesky, and is not intended to replace it entirely. Except on third-party servers, which will have the possibility to deactivate it.

The future of social networks?

Bluesky isn’t reinventing the wheel, and the company says its tool is similar to other blocking features already available on most social networks. What it does, however, is enable the deployment of custom protection measures usable by multiple users, who can also work in concert to develop and refine them.
