Good news at Tesla, the price of recharging is dropping on Superchargers

After a slight increase last December, the price of recharging is falling again on Tesla Superchargers in Europe and in particular in France. Be careful, because the prices always vary according to the time of day.

The price of electricity has risen sharply in recent months, with a wholesale price reaching 1,000 euros per MWh last August, compared to 85 euros in 2021. A situation which then has a direct impact on terminal operators recharge, who then had to raise their prices. This was particularly the case of Tesla with its Superchargers, but also of Allego.

After the drastic price drop on the Model 3 and Model Y in France, Tesla is lowering the price of charging on its Superchargers.

A little drop

But while the cost of energy plays yo-yo, it is difficult for companies to know on which foot to dance. Therefore Tesla keeps changing its prices, while it also implemented pricing based on peak and off-peak hours last November. The goal ? Encourage owners of electric cars to plug in outside peaks and thus reduce tensions on the network thanks to more advantageous prices.

But while the situation seems to have improved slightly, now charging prices drop again. Good news, France is indeed concerned by this new pricing policy, even if the situation is not similar in other European countries where it is completely the opposite as can be seen on the site of Felix Arthur.

It is now necessary to count 0.34 euro per kWh outside peak hours and 0.38 euro during this period, which extends from 16 to 20 hours. For comparison, the kWh was displayed at 0.47 euro on average during off-peak hours and 0.56 euros during peak hours last December. Prices may vary very slightly from one station to another, on the order of a few cents. The price per 100 km on the motorway then varies from around 6 to 7 euros.

However, these much cheaper prices are only valid if you own a Tesla or drive another electric car, but pay a monthly subscription of 12.99 euros. Thereby, it will cost you around 19 euros to fill the 60 kWh battery of your Model Y Propulsion during off-peak hours and around 23 euros at the end of the day, when the network is most under tension.

A price that remains high

Rest assured, if you have not subscribed to the subscription, you will also be able to take advantage of the lower prices. Indeed, it is now necessary to count 0.52 euro per kWh during off-peak hours and 0.58 euro between 4 and 8 p.m. For memory, you had to pay 0.65 euro per kWh last November, which represents a rather interesting fall. The price per 100 km on the motorway is between 9 and 10 euros.

If you want to fill the 54 kWh battery of your Peugeot e-208, the best-selling model in France last December, you will have to pay 28 euros in off-peak hours and 31 euros during peak hours. Recharging your electric car on a Supercharger should therefore not cost more than refueling for the moment, unlike with some operators, such as Bélib’, which recently increased its prices.

With this small drop, Tesla’s Superchargers become cheaper than Allego’s terminals, whose prices were also lowered in December. On the latter, it is necessary to count 0.69 euro per kW for the 50 kW terminals and 0.60 euro on 22 kW sockets during off-peak hours. It is then necessary to count 0.79 euro per kWh on the 50 kWh terminals in peak hours. Thus, the Dutch company remains one of the most expensive in the territory.

For comparison, Ionity charges 0.69 euros per kWh of 350 kW and only 0.39 euros for those of 50 kW. If Electra also displays affordable prices, around 0.44 euro on all its terminals up to 300 kW, the prize goes to Lidl, with only 40 cents per kWh for a power ranging from 180 to 360 kW.

Electric car: how Tesla lost the highway charging battle

If Tesla is indeed a must in fast charging, we do however notice a size difference compared to other players: its location is generally off the highways. We will come back…
