A sad year for Hollywood cinema. This Monday, July 25, Paul Sorvino, American actor known for his legendary role in the feature film Freedmen, died at a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. It was his spokesperson who announced the sad news in a statement released by the American agency Associated Street Press. The comedian, who would have left “of a natural death”was 83 years old.
Paul Sorvino was a well-known figure on both the big and the small screen. Born in 1939 in Brooklyn, he had played in The Flambeur (1974), alongside James Caan, who died on July 6. We found him on the bill of other feature films, but also of series, between the 1970s and the 2020s: Dolphin Day (1973), Angel and Big Joe (1975), I will have your skin (1982), The Adventures of Rocketeer (1991), The firm (1993), Doc West and Doc West 2 (2009), cold terror (1985), New York Judicial Police (1991-1992), or even Godfather of Harlem (2019). But it’s thanks to his role in Martin Scorsese’s film, Freedmen, that it has been recognized by the profession. In this production released in 1990, and nominated six times for the Oscars, he played the role of Paul Cicero, alongside Robert de Niro and Ray Liotta, who also died last May.
His family “devastated”
Paul Sorvino leaves behind a grieving family. In a statement, his widow Dee Dee Sorvino said “devastated” : “The love of my life and the most wonderful man who ever lived is gone. I am heartbroken.” The actor had a daughter, Mira, who inherited his talent as she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress after her performance in Woody Allen’s film Cursed Aphrodite (1995). “He was the most wonderful of fathers. I love him so much. Sending you love to the stars while you ride there daddy”she wrote on Twitter.
