Determined to make your life considerably easier, Google has just rolled out an alternative to passwords when logging into your account.
If Apple has already materialized its desire to do away with passwords with iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, it is now Google’s turn to draw the first outlines of a future without passwords.
A Truly Passwordless Future?
Almost a year ago to the day, the tech giants announced how they intended to do without passwords for good. In a press release prepared by Apple, Microsoft and Google, we learned how they intended, together, to improve our security. The idea then was to set up a system allowing users to log in to their accounts without a password, all using a simple device. In other words, a website or an application only needs to detect an access key to authenticate you.
This method, based on public key cryptography, wants to get rid of many constraints caused by passwords. The latter, beyond being reused a large number of times, and therefore easily opening the door to phishing, are often far too complex to memorize. But rest assured, logging into your Google account will soon be easier and more secure than ever!
Google deploys access keys for your account
In an official press release, Google has just announced the possibility of creating access keys for your Google account. Here is what she says: Access keys are a more convenient and secure alternative to passwords. They work on all major platforms and browsers and allow users to log in by unlocking their computer or mobile device with their fingerprint, facial recognition or local PIN. “.
The American firm then added that you can create an access key for each of the devices you use, whether it’s a smartphone, tablet or PC. In addition, in order to protect you against the locking of your Google account, in the event of loss or theft for example, your access keys can be saved and synchronized with other devices that you own: ” For example, if you create a passkey on your iPhone, this passkey will also be available on your other Apple devices if they are signed into the same iCloud account. “says Google.
To activate the access keys, first start by going to the management settings of your account. Then click on the “Security” tab and select “How to sign in to Google”. Finally, all you have to do is click on “Access keys”. Obviously, and as Google rightly reminds us, only set up passkeys on devices you own.
