The Google Phone application for Android is preparing to welcome a very practical new feature, called Lookup. Discovery in the beta version 127.0.620688474this feature mainly aims to help users identify unknown callers.
Lookup: how does it work?
Unlike Truecaller, a phone book app with a built-in caller ID feature, the Google Phone app’s Lookup feature is not a replacement for that service.
Indeed, Truecaller displays the name, location and other information about the caller, provided that this data is stored in its database, collected from its registered users, community and social networks.
The Lookup feature in the Google Phone app works differently. It does not display any information about the incoming call until you answer it. On the other hand, after the call, you can do a quick search using applications capable of handling web searches. This new feature allows you to save a few steps compared to a manual search by copying and pasting the number into a browser.
A privacy-friendly feature
It is important to note that the Lookup feature is less likely to provide information about personal phone numbers, as it is primarily used to find businesses whose contact details are indexed in the Google search engine. So Android apps like Truecaller are not affected by this new functionality.
As for the availability of the Lookup feature in the stable version of the Google Phone app, it seems to have already been available in Japan since last month and could be rolled out worldwide as early as next month. Android users will soon be able to take advantage of this handy feature to more easily identify unknown callers, without compromising their privacy.
