Google is working on a new Chromecast
. It would complete (or replace) the model launched in 2020 by being equipped with Google TV, and possibly with support for the AV1 codec.

The info comes to us from 9to5Google who was able to consult documentation evoking Google’s work on a new Android product, internally designated by the code name “Boreal”. This name refers to the Chromecast family and does not leave much doubt about the nature of said product.

Google TV at the controllers, with AV1 support?

At this stage, however, no technical specifications have leaked, which leads us to speculation. Logically, this new Chromecast will be animated by Google TV and will support the free AV1 codec, absent on the previous model. 9to5Google believes for the rest to know that this new accessory will arrive on the market this year.

As a reminder, the AV1 codec has the particularity of being open to everyone, so it can be used freely by many players in the industry. Above all, this solution offers a 30% efficiency gain compared to competing codecs (H.265 and VP9, ​​for example). What reduce the launch time of streaming videos or quality drops during playback.
