Some buildings are so big that they have their own maps in Google Maps. This applies, for example, to many airport terminals, train stations, museums, concert halls and shopping centers. In order to use the function, the map mode must be set, not the satellite mode. The buildings available for the indoor maps are colored yellow and outlined on the map. If you want to find your way there, you zoom in on Google Maps until numbers appear on the left side of the page. These represent the floors of a building and when you tap on them, they release a floor plan.
Google Maps: Interior view available for many buildings in Germany
There are now a large number of buildings on Google Maps for which the indoor maps are available. In Germany these are, for example, the airports in Munich, Cologne-Bonn and Frankfurt, the German Museum in Munich, the O2 World in Hamburg or the Kaufhaus des Westens in Berlin. Even so, very few users are likely to be familiar with the feature.
Apple’s competing map service Apple Maps also has a “Look Inside” function for some airports and shopping centers around the world. The airport view is even more detailed than on Google. However, significantly fewer buildings are available for the feature.
